Primark said it was "shocked and saddened" to hear of the deaths of up to 200 people following the collapse of an eight-storey building in Bangladesh used by one of its suppliers.
Rescue workers searching for survivors are digging through the rubble of the Rana Plaza building in Savar, 20 miles outside the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, which collapsed on Wednesday.
The death toll could climb higher, police said on Thursday, with people
trapped under the rubble of a complex that housed garment factories
supplying retailers in Europe and North America.
Four garment factories occupied six of the eight floors. New Wave Style, the
largest of the factories, lists retailers such as Primark, Matalan and
Bonmarche among its customers.
Up to 2,000 people were working in the building at the time of the collapse. More
than 1,000 people were injured.
In a statement released on their website, a Primark spokesman said: "The
company is shocked and deeply saddened by this appalling incident at Savar,
near Dhaka, and expresses its condolences to all of those involved.
