The Nigeria House of Representatives on Tuesday the 5th March 2013 approved a life imprisonment for any person convicted of rape. The committee also approved a minimum of 20 years for anyone convicted of gang raping without an option of fine.
However, the bill states that any offender under the age of 14 years, the offender shall be liable to minimum of 14 years imprisonment and a minimum of 12 years without the option of fine.
The bill< sponsored by Hon Abike Dabiri also approved 25 years jail term for any person attempted to use chemical, biological or any harmful liquid on another person.
Meanwhile, the bill also approved four years imprisonment or a fine not more than N200,000 or both for anyone convicted of performing female circumcision and general mutilation or engaging someone to carry it out. Aiding female circumcision attracts N100, 000 or two years in jail or both.
Three years imprisonment also for any person convicted of frustrating investigation and prosecution of offenders is guilty of felony and liable to a fine of not more than N500,000.
